Literacy Council of Union County

Wongdum Faith

My name is Wongdum Faith and I was born in Thailand. I came to El Dorado in 1996 with my husband who was in the U.S. Air Force. I went to the Literacy Council get help with reading more than ten years ago. I met with Mrs. Wharton every week in her church. We have read many books, but I hope to learn to read even better.

Adela Lopez

My name is Adela Lopez and I was born in Mexico. I came to Nashville, AR seven years ago. I lived there for three years and then I moved to El Dorado, where I currently live. I came to the literacy council here to study English over three years ago. I have learned many words and I now understand English better than ever before.

Mr. Abdullah

Learning how to read is something I have wanted to do all of my life. I quit school and got married at a very early age. God blessed me with four children. I struggled to make a living, but I was able to keep them in school. I did not want them going through life not knowing how to read.

When I went to the literacy council, I could not read anything. With the help of my tutor and the rest of the people there, I can now pick up a book and read most of the words. Thank God! I am still learning every day, and one day I hope to be an accomplished reader.

Reading is important to me. I am going to celebrate my 53rd birthday soon. I want to write a book about my experiences to encourage others to keep on trying. Life is tough, but not impossible. Even though I struggle with MS, I will not give up.
