Pulaski County Learning Center, Inc

Kirk Young

My name is Kirk Young, Jr and I am a 38-year-old single male attending Pulaski County Learning Center in North Little Rock. I grew up in the Little Rock area and attended North Pulaski Heights School.  My progress in elementary school was hard and I was called slow because I had a learning disability.  No one took the time to sit down and work one-on-one with me.  I didn’t feel like I was needed there and did not feel like I was really learning, so I dropped out in the 8th or 9th grade.  I tried to work but never went far because of my lack of knowledge.  Thanks to my Sister, who called and made arrangements for me to attend the Pulaski County Learning Center.   I have been coming on a regular basis and I read better than I did before I started.  My math skills are improving also.  I now know how to add and subtract.    I am so glad that there is a literacy council in my Community.  I always tell people not to give up when you are studying and encourage people to get an education.

Krishna Davis

My name is Krishana Davis and I am an on-line student at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.  I am seeking a degree in Adult Education.  I am a volunteer tutor at Job Corp through the Pulaski County Learning Center.  This has been a wonderful experience.  I am glad that I have the opportunity to help students with their homework and learning skills.  I didn’t realize that there were so many young adults reading below the 5th grade level and lower.  The tutor training from the Pulaski County Learning Center and hands on experience from the Job Corp is preparing me for a career in education.

Darek Braddock
Before I came to the Learning Center of North Little Rock, I could not read or write. I used to be embarrassed because of this. I did not think that there was a place that could help me. However, I am now learning basic skills. Having someone work with me one on one is great. It is opening doors for me. I know there will be a time when I will no longer need help.

I am very happy to have found a learning center where I can learn English and better myself. I tell the people there they are fortunate to be able to learn for free. In Mexico we are not so fortunate; we have to pay for schooling there. We have opportunities in this country and I am grateful for that. My tutor is very patient with us and I enjoy each lesson.

I like coming to The Learning Center. I can read better and I am writing better too. My teacher helps me all the time. I can also remember things better. I am studying to get my driver’s license and my improved reading and writing skills are helping. It makes me happy to know that there are places that really give their time to help someone like me learn to read and write better. I am learning how to be more confident in myself. I also joined the gym. I know I am doing good because now I think it’s fun to read.

Octavio Hernandez

I am Octavio Hernandez. I came to The Learning Center one year ago. I had no job and no place to live. I learned to do job applications. I also learned how to do applications to find somewhere to live.  The Learning Center helped me very much. The teachers are very nice. They spend time with me to help me learn. I am not fast but I am doing better every day. The center has been a lot of help to me
