Carroll County Literacy Council
Becky Camp Becky Camp was born in Magnolia Arkansas. When she was an infant she contracted a viral infection, which left her with learning disabilities. When Becky was an adult, she moved to Eureka Springs, AR., to live at the Ridgeview Residential Assisted Care Home. One day while visiting with the visiting Pastor she told him that she wanted to learn to read! He told her about the Carroll County Literacy Council. Steve Gary agreed to be Becky's Tutor. They met twice weekly at Ridgeview and worked on reading, writing, and math. This was Steve's first CCLC student. Steve got interested in tutoring when he was in grade school. Steve's Grandfather suffered a stroke and lost his ability to read. Steve helped him to relearn to read. Becky made good progress in her studies with Steve. The picture of her and Steve show her holding her certificate of achievement. Steve said it was very rewarding to teach someone to read!
I am Antonio Galdamez, 38 years old from El Salvador. I am a widower and am raising my two children, a girl, 8, and a boy, 7. I have never been to school. I enrolled in the Carroll County Literacy program because I want to learn to read and write English. Part of this desire comes from the fact that my children do not speak any Spanish. The children do well in school, so I feel the need to improve my English vocabulary as well as learn how to read and write. I live an America and need to speak, write and read English. In order to make myself understood by other people, I must increase my English vocabulary. I hope learning English will get me a better job.
My name is Chad and I am twenty years old. I had a hard time in school and was always in special education classes. I dropped out of school when I was about sixteen. I now belong to the Club of the Ozarks, which is part of Ozark Guidance. They suggested that I come to Carroll County Literacy Council. I have completed the first book in basic reading and my tutor said that I did really well on the checkup. I am now starting the second book. My goal is to read a book that I have at home.
