Literacy Council of Arkansas County

Marisa Covington
My name is Marisa Covington. I am a student at the literacy council. I have been a student for two years. I like to read and hope to continue my lessons. Reading helps me in everyday life. My tutor comes twice a week. We study for one hour each time.

I started in book one and am now in book three.

Jennifer Cooper
My name is Jennifer Cooper and I am a tutor for the Literacy Council of Arkansas County. I am eighteen months into my two years of service through AmeriCorps. I am currently tutoring twenty-seven adults in reading. I am thankful for this opportunity and have enjoyed every Moment. It has been an honor to be a part of this program.

Maria Licet Nunez

I think it is very important to be able to speak English correctly. I was looking for a program to help my employees and me. I was lead to the Literacy Council of Arkansas County by a very good customer who had heard about the ESL class on the local radio. She called the council for me. The director and a tutor came out and were able to set up a time that worked for us. We have class twice weekly from 2:00pm-4:00pm in a room in the back of our restaurant—that is the slow time of the day for us. We presently have two employees and I am encouraging them to join the class at least one day per week.

The program is helping me meet my goal of speaking better English and having better all-around communication skills. It has helped me in my job and in my everyday life. I appreciate being able to learn English as a second language.

Robert Coleman

I was enrolled in Adult Education classes, and my reading scores were very low. My teacher asked me to contact the Literacy Council. Before I had a chance the council was contacting me. I wanted to improve my reading to help me get through my GED classes and I wanted to be able to comprehend what I had read. So I started private tutoring with Ms. Linda one day a week.

It has helped improve my reading skills; it helps me on my job. It has helped me be able to help my son with his reading and homework. The ladies work with me at the council, if I can’t make it because I need to work overtime, they are very understanding, yet encourage me to come another evening. I believe that by improving my reading skills I will someday own my own business.

Jay Vincent Bednar

Hello my name is Jay. I am a student with the Literacy Council in Stuttgart. My tutor is Jennifer Cooper. I tutor for (2) hours a week. We work on reading and writing. I like to cook and fish. I also like to go to the theater and state contest. My goals are to make more money, shop, and keep cooking new stuff.

Felix Hernandez

Hello my name is Felix Hernadez. I have been with the Literacy Council since 2005. They have helped me to be able to speak and understand English better. It has helped me in my job because we have lessons that apply to the grocery store where I work. I was having trouble stocking and my tutor had a month-long lesson on just stocking shelves and working with supplies.

I hope to be able to increase my English skills so that I may find a better paying job. We are now working on writing. This is hard for me, but with the help of the ladies at the council I feel I will make it.
